What
is the solution?
We
need to publicize the comfort women affair
We
need to enlighten the world about this inhumane incident.
Of all the countries in the world, many do not even
know that comfort women had existed. In some cases,
not even Japanese people know about the comfort women,
despite the fact that such operations were done by imperial
Japan. Enlightening the people would not only raise
awareness, but help the victims overcome their shame.
Then we would have more people fighting for compensation
on the front line.
We must carry out protests
such as the 'Wednesday Demonstration' on a global basis
and demand compensation from Japan. We must also use
the Internet, valued because of its accessibility, and
request support. Also, we must come up with plans for
countries with no access to the Internet. (There are
many comfort women victims in South Eastern Asia nations,
where Internet accessibility in low.)
We
must work to improve the human rights of women
Improving
women's rights is the most important thing, but it hasn't
truly picked up the pace yet. For instance, prostitution
is still on the lose, and women become men's sexual
slaves in case of war. Women's role in reclaiming the
human rights of women is particularly vital. (We are
not underestimating the men's participation, of course.)
Women worldwide must come together to correct the wrong
impression people have about women and sex. In the case
of Asian countries, we must work together with Japanese
women and demand adequate compensation from the Japanese
government.
We
must exert international pressure upon Japan
We
must exert pressure on Japan at an international level.
Japan has been trying to raise it's international status
through dispatching Peace Keeper Operation(PKO) to Mozambique
in 1993, the Republic of Zaire in 1994, Golan Plat.
in 1996, East Timor in 1999, and Iraq in 2004 as well
as economic aiding many underdeveloped countries. Japan
has been eyeing a permanent seat in the United Nations
Security Council by making a good impression on other
countries. But we must take into notice a couple
of questionable acts Japan has committed before considering
a permanent seat in the Council for Japan. The Japanese
government issued condoms to PKO soldiers upon dispatching
them to Cambodia. Japan, while dispatching PKO troops
for humanitarian assistance, has been discreetly encouraging
inhumane behavior. Also, Japan has yet to work out the
comfort women issues, preferring to make excuses. Japan,
to be considered eligible for a permanent seat in the
Council, must solve these problems. Germany's
continuous apology for Nazism has won Germany a favorable
reputation. We must induce similar behavior from Japan
by exerting international pressure.
